They All Look The Same… Until You Cut One Open

They All Look The Same… Until You Cut One Open

What Really Makes a High-Performance FRP Door Different?

Walk through almost any food processing plant, cold storage facility, or cleanroom operation, and you’ll see fiberglass (FRP) doors everywhere.

At first glance, they all look nearly identical.

They’re (usually) white.
They’re smooth.
They’re marketed as durable and hygienic.

So how different can they really be?

The answer is: more than most people realize.

The real difference isn’t always what you see on the outside—it’s how the door is built. And when your facility depends on sanitation, durability, and reliability, those differences matter every single day.

Not All FRP Doors Are Built the Same

Many fiberglass doors on the market are manufactured using a laminated construction process.

In simple terms, fiberglass sheets are bonded to a core using adhesives. While this method creates a finished door that may look clean and professional, it also creates multiple layers within the door.

Over time, those layers can become areas where demanding environments begin to take their toll.

Think about what these doors experience every day:

    • High-pressure washdowns
    • Moisture
    • Harsh cleaning chemicals
    • Constant temperature fluctuations
    • Heavy cart and forklift traffic
    • Thousands of open-and-close cycles

These aren’t ordinary environments.

They’re some of the toughest conditions a door will ever face.

That’s why construction matters.

Gordon Freudenberg of Weiland

A Different Way to Build a Door

At Weiland, we don’t believe durability should rely on glue.

That’s why our FRP doors are built using our proprietary FiberShell™ technology.

Instead of laminating fiberglass sheets together, the fiberglass shell is molded into a seamless, one-piece construction that wraps the door.

The result?

    • No exposed seams around the edges
    • Fewer areas where moisture can infiltrate
    • A cleaner, more durable exterior
    • A fiberglass shell that’s 50% thicker than many traditional FRP doors

When you’re operating a facility where cleanliness and longevity are critical, those details make a significant difference.

What’s Inside Matters Just as Much

A door’s performance isn’t determined by its exterior alone.

What’s inside matters too.

Every Weiland FRP door is built with our proprietary CleanCor™ injected core.

Unlike some door cores that may contain voids or gaps, CleanCor™ is designed to create a consistent, void-free interior.

Why is that important?

In hygienic environments, eliminating hidden spaces helps reduce areas where moisture can accumulate.

For industries like:

    • Food Processing
    • Beverage Manufacturing
    • Pet Nutrition
    • Bakeries
    • Cold Storage
    • Pharmaceutical
    • Cleanrooms

…that added level of protection is an important part of long-term performance.

Gordon Freudenberg of Weiland

Built for the Real World

Every facility has its own unique challenges.

Some battle constant moisture.

Others deal with freezing temperatures.

Some run around the clock with nonstop employee traffic.

Others require frequent sanitation multiple times every day.

A door shouldn’t become another maintenance issue.

It should quietly do its job year after year.

That’s why Weiland doors are engineered specifically for demanding environments—not simply adapted to work in them.

Kim, Weiland customer support representative

More Than Just the Door

Performance doesn’t stop at the door panel.

One of the biggest frustrations contractors experience is receiving a door that still requires additional preparation before installation.

We approach things differently.

Our personnel doors are shipped as complete door systems, including factory-installed hardware and pre-hung assemblies whenever possible.

That means:

    • Faster installation
    • Less field modification
    • Better consistency
    • Less downtime on the jobsite

Because the fewer surprises there are during installation, the better the project goes for everyone involved.

Why It Matters

Choosing an FRP door isn’t simply checking a box on a specification sheet.

It’s choosing something your facility will rely on every single day.

When a door is opened hundreds—or even thousands—of times each week, every design decision matters.

The shell.

The core.

The hardware.

The construction.

The installation.

Every detail contributes to long-term performance.

The Weiland Difference

At Weiland, we’re proud to manufacture our FRP personnel doors right here in Nebraska.

For us, quality isn’t a slogan.

It’s a responsibility.

Every door that leaves our facility represents the people who designed it, built it, inspected it, and stood behind it.

That’s why we believe the best products aren’t just built to look good on Day One.

They’re built to keep performing long after installation.

Because when your operation depends on reliability, “good enough” simply isn’t good enough.

Made in the USA. Built for demanding environments. Built to last.

If you’re evaluating FRP doors for your next project, don’t just compare what you can see.

Ask how they’re built.

The answer may make all the difference.

The right door should be something you install… and rarely have to think about again.

We’re proud to say we haven’t had to replace a Weiland FRP door due to product failure. That’s the level of confidence we build into every door that leaves our facility.

If you’re planning a new project or replacing existing doors, we’d love the opportunity to show you what makes Weiland different and help you find the right solution for your facility. 402-383-2076

5 Common Mistakes in Cold Storage (And How to Avoid Them!)

5 Common Mistakes in Cold Storage (And How to Avoid Them!)

When it comes to cold storage, small mistakes can lead to big problems.

From door selection to hardware choices, every detail matters in ensuring efficiency, durability, and long-term performance. Let’s dive into five common mistakes we see in cold storage construction—and how to avoid them!

1. Choosing the Incorrect Door for your Application.

Not all cold storage doors are created equal! One of the biggest mistakes is using the incorrect door type in the wrong application. Personnel doors are lighter and easier to operate but less insulated than a cooler and freezer door.  Freezer doors may require extra insulation and often come with heat to prevent ice buildup. Using a cooler door in a freezer environment can lead to frost issues, inefficient cooling, and even door failure.

Solution: Always confirm whether your application requires a cooler door (above freezing) or a freezer door (below freezing) before selecting a door type. Also, make sure to specify the temperature difference between both rooms.

2. Misjudging When to Add Heat

Heat isn’t always necessary, but when it is, not including it can lead to serious problems like ice buildup, frozen seals, or difficulty operating the door. The trick is knowing when to include heat and when it’s not needed.

Solution: Add heat to cooler doors, especially for gaskets, sills, and frames, to prevent freezing issues. When in doubt, add heat!

3. Installing the Door Panel on the Wrong Side

Believe it or not, which side of the wall the door panel is installed on makes a difference. The door should always be placed on the warmer side of the opening to prevent condensation and ice buildup.

Solution:

  • Coolers: Install the door on the outside (warmer side) of the cooler.
  • Freezers: Install the door on the outside (warmer side) of the freezer.

Getting this wrong can lead to frost and condensation issues that impact performance and longevity.

4. Overlooking the Right Hardware

When it comes to hardware, choosing between Cold Storage (CS) vs. Pro Series is key. Many assume stainless steel is always necessary, but that’s not always the case.

If you’re in a true cold storage (CS) facility with no washdown requirements, stainless steel isn’t needed. While we often lead with stainless steel to be on the safe side, a cold storage facility without moisture concerns can perform just fine with standard CS Series hardware, saving you cost without sacrificing performance.

5. Selecting the Inappropriate Sill Type

Choosing the correct sill type is crucial for the performance and longevity of cold storage doors. An ill-suited sill can lead to air leaks, frost accumulation, and operational challenges.

Common Sill Types:

    • Flush Sill: This design aligns the door sweep with the floor, facilitating easy movement of carts and personnel. However, it may be more susceptible to air infiltration if not properly sealed.

    • High Sill (Step Down): Features a transition between the interior floor and the lower exterior ground or landing. This frame style is typically used for exterior doors approved for step-down exits.

    • High Sill (Step Over): Designed to be raised, where personnel step over the bottom frame. This style of frame is more typical for penthouses and some blast freezer doors, where a step-over is approved.

Considerations for Sill Selection:

    • Traffic Type: High foot traffic or frequent use of carts may necessitate a flush sill for seamless movement.

    • Environmental Control: Areas requiring stringent temperature and humidity control might benefit from a high sill to minimize air exchange.

    • Cleaning Protocols: Facilities with rigorous washdown procedures should consider sills that facilitate effective drainage and are resistant to water accumulation.
